Frequently Asked Questions
Questions about Wireless Broadband:
- What is Wireless Broadband?
- Wireless Broadband is a service provided by Net1 which provides you with Always-On access the internet at high speed for a flat monthly fee, without the need for a telephone line.
- What is "Always On"?
- "Always On" means that you have a permanent connection to our network, with a static IP address, which is unique to you and identifies you on the Internet. It also means that there is no need to dial up each time you wish to use the internet, cutting out telephone bills, delays in getting online and engaged tones!
- What are the advantages of Wireless?
- Wireless connectivity allows users to access a high-speed internet connection, quickly and securely. The service covers areas which have not yet had their telephone exchanged upgraded for broadband. In fact, a telephone line is not even required - we install a dish on your roof with a cable running to your computer - simple! Plus, encryption technology means that you and only you will be the end user of the service - nobody will intercept your signal and use your broadband.
- Can I still use the telephone while I'm using Wireless Broadband?
- Of course! Wireless Broadband has nothing to do with your existing phone line in any way, so you can make and receive calls as normal while using the internet. In fact, Wireless Broadband is of extra benefit to you if you don't have an existing phone line or if you want to get rid of your phone line as you can make telephone calls at reduced rates over your Broadband connection using VoIP technology, getting rid of the need to pay line rental altogether!
- What difference will Wireless Broadband make?
- A Wireless Broadband connection from Net1 is usually over thirty times faster than the fastest possible connection you can get from dialling up over a standard telephone line, meaning that you will be able to send and receive emails, download web pages and files and use web services such as streaming audio and video and Voice over IP much quicker and more efficiently than before. Many Internet services, such as VoIP and streaming video, are simply not usable without a high speed connection. Wireless Broadband make your Internet usage much more efficient, saving you time and money and making the whole experience much more rewarding - and fun!
- What is DSL?
- DSL (or "Digital Subscriber Line") is the technology used to deliver digital data transmission, such as a high-speed Internet connection, over a telephone line. Therefore, to get DSL, you MUST have an existing telephone line. Typically the upload speeds available on a standard DSL line are lower than the download speeds.
- How does Wireless Broadband compare to DSL?
- Wireless Broadband is available now, and can be installed in a relatively short amount of time. It is also a lot more flexible than DSL and, if you move home or your business moves premises, you can take it with you without much hassle. Not only that, but it can achieve much faster speeds than standard DSL services currently available, and the upload speeds are usually just as high as the download speeds. See our packages for further details.
- Can I connect more than one computer?
- Absolutely! Using a router, you can have many computers sharing one Broadband connection - either connected with wires or wirelessly. For example, you could be browsing the web on a desktop machine in one room while someone else is sending an email from a laptop wirelessly from another room, another person is making a VoIP call in another room and yet another person is playing online games with their XBOX 360 or Playstation 3 somewhere else in the house. The possibilities are practically limitless!

- Your IP address is a unique numeric address for your connection to the Internet. This address, along with other installation information will be provided to you by Net1. If your Net1 service is directly connected to your computer you will need to have this information entered on your computer so that it can communicate with the network and access the Internet. For detailed instructions on how to enter this information, please click here.
- What changes do I need to make to my router?
-
If you use a router to connect to the Net1 network, you will need to have certain settings entered in your router so that it can connect correctly to the Net1 network. These setting changes must be made to your router and not your computer. For detailed instructions on how to make these changes, please click here.
